YARMOUTH, Maine (AP) – Gunfire that erupted on a busy highway in Maine is linked to a second crime scene where four people were found dead in a home about 25 miles away in the town of Bowdoin, state police said Tuesday.Three people were injured in the shooting that followed on Interstate 295 in Yarmouth. One person was in custody after the highway shooting. At least one of the injured people was seriously hurt.Some police at the scene along I-295 carried rifles or peered inside the trunk of a car that had apparent bullet holes in the windshield. Police in Groveland are looking to identify a woman who allegedly left a puppy behind in an alley, prompting an animal cruelty investigation. Groveland Police Chief Jeffrey T. Gillen said his department received a report on Monday afternoon about an apparent abandoned puppy being discovered near a business on Main Street.Reviewing evidence, including surveillance footage, police found that an Australian Shepherd puppy had been abandoned in an alleyway by a woman driving a black SUV. Chris Smith, a former NFL defensive lineman who played for five teams across an eight-year career, died Monday. He was 31.Smith’s death was announced Tuesday by his agent and one of his former teams, the Cleveland Browns. His cause of death was not released.“Chris was one of the kindest people, teammates and friends we’ve had in our organization,” the Browns said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”Smith last played in the NFL in 2021.
