A fire ripped through a historic church in Spencer Monday, toppling the structure’s steeple and drawing a massive emergency response. After hours spent battling the flames, investigators on Friday evening said the fire may have been caused by lightning. “I’m just sad for the parishioners and the generations and generations of people who have put their heart and soul into this church,” said Danielle Debo after witnessing the fire.The Spencer Police Department shared multiple photos of the First Congregational United Church steeple showing heavy smoke around 3 p.m. on Friday. Firefighters from surrounding communities responded, pouring water on the structure as smoke continued to rise over the area. Friday night’s game between the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays was postponed due to inclement weather and will be made up on Monday at 4:05 p.m.The game was called at 8:22 after a rain delay of one hour and 12 minutes, which was prompted by severe thunderstorms that moved into the Fenway Park area right around when the game was originally scheduled to begin.Garrett Whitlock, who was originally scheduled to pitch Friday night, will now pitch Game 1 on Saturday, and Game 2’s starter is still undecided. Halton police say a man was pulled from a backyard pool in Oakville without vital signs on Friday afternoon.Officers were called to the residence on Samford Place, near Third Line and Bridge Road, around 3:45 p.m.A man was discovered in the pool without vital signs and rushed to a local hospital.No other information was provided.Recently, there have been several fatal incidents of people drowning in backyard pools. HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii Gov. Josh Green on Friday signed legislation that will allow more people to carry concealed firearms but at the same time prohibit people from taking guns to a wide range of places, including beaches, hospitals, stadiums, bars that serve alcohol and movie theaters. Private businesses allowing guns will have to post a sign to that effect. The legal overhaul comes in response to a U.S. Supreme Court ruling from last year that expanded gun rights by saying Americans have a right to carry firearms in public for self-defense.
