Derrick Rose hits free agency after Knicks decline option; Josh Hart declines player option

Derrick Rose’s tenure in New York — a two-stint rollercoaster that briefly resuscitated his career— is probably finished.Prior to Saturday night’s deadline, the Knicks declined the point guard’s $15.5 million team option for next season, sending Rose into free agency. The move was expected since Rose had no spot in Tom Thibodeau’s rotation. Still, there was a chance the Knicks kept Rose on the books to use his expiring contract in a trade.Rose, 34, was acquired via trade from the Pistons in 2021 and played an integral role in leading the Knicks to the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs that season. It earned him a lucrative contract that summer, but an ankle injury sabotaged Rose’s following season and he never recovered a consistent role. In his last two seasons, Rose appeared in a combined 53 games.Despite the demotion, Rose was lauded as a team leader throughout the roster and praised by Thibodeau. There’s a chance Rose r...One in life-threatening condition after being struck by vehicle in Lake Shore and Jarvis area

The head of the private Russian military force Wagner said Saturday he has ordered his mercenaries to halt their march on Moscow and retreat to their field camps in Ukraine to avoid shedding Russian blood. The announcement from Yevgeny Prigozhin appeared to defuse a dramatically escalating crisis that represented the most significant challenge to President Vladimir Putin’s leadership in his more than two decades in power.Moscow had braced for the arrival of a private army led by the rebellious mercenary commander by erecting checkpoints with armored vehicles and troops on its southern edge. Red Square was shut down, and the mayor urged motorists to stay off some roads.Prigozhin said that while his men were just 200 kilometers (120 miles) from Moscow, he decided to turn them back to avoid “shedding Russian blood.”He didn’t say whether Moscow has responded to his demand to oust Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu. There was no immediate comment from the Kremlin. The announcement followed a s...Wagner chief says he's ordered forces to cease advance toward Moscow to avoid bloodshed

(The Hill) – Wagner Group chief Yevgeny Prigozhin ordered his troops to stop their advance to Moscow on Saturday, a day after he committed to overthrowing the Russian military leadership.“We [are] turning our columns around and going back in the other direction toward our field camps, in accordance with the plan,” Prigozhin said in a message on Telegram. The government of Belarus assisted in negotiating a settlement between Prigozhin and the Russian government, a statement from Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko claimed.Prigozhin said his troops will now return to their bases in order to “avoid shedding Russian blood.” Who is the head of the mercenary group who called for an armed rebellion in Russia? Moscow was prepared for the arrival of Wagner's army, however, setting up checkpoints with armored vehicles and troops, according to the Associated Press. The Red Square was also closed down and the mayor issued a declaration to stay off certain roads, AP reported.Russian Pres...Weekend Break: Golden Girls Pop-Up Kitchen

(NerdWallet) - Women often don’t score as well as men in surveys of financial literacy. One area where we seem to do better is “longevity literacy,” or understanding how long we’re likely to live.Longevity literacy is essential to smart retirement planning. Overestimate your longevity, and you could retire too late or scrimp too much. Underestimate it and you could run short of money. In a recent TIAA Institute study, 43% of women correctly estimated the life expectancy of 60-year-old women in the U.S. (The right answer was 85.) Only 32% of men chose the correct answer for the life expectancy for 60-year-old men, which was 82. Men also were far more likely than women to underestimate life expectancy — and that’s a huge potential problem for both sexes.A man who expects to die in his 70s might draw too much from retirement funds or start Social Security too early. That could leave him — and the spouse who may outlive him — with too little income later on.“A lot of people do OK in thei...'Whiskey plates': In what states can you find controversial license plates?

(NEXSTAR) — In the U.S., roughly 1 million arrests are made annually for driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or both, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Outside of the physical consequences of impaired driving — data shows one person is killed every 45 minutes in a crash involving an alcohol-impaired driver — the legal consequences can be heavy. They can also vary by state. In South Dakota, for example, an impaired driver can lose their driver’s license for at least a month after their first driving under the influence offense. In Wisconsin, a driver can lose their license for six to nine months. If a child is in the car at the time of the offense, that can become a year to a year and a half, plus a jail sentence of five days to six months. In both states, it’s possible nobody knows the driver has been convicted. That isn’t necessarily the case for residents in the state between Wisconsin and South Dakota.
