The endorsement, obtained by The Associated Press in advance of the formal release, represents the first time the groups have jointly announced support for a presidential candidate. The groups include Brady and its youth-led arm, Team Enough; Community Justice Action Fund; Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund and its grassroots networks, Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action; and Giffords. It also follows similar joint endorsements from abortion rights groups, labor unions and climate organizations — a strategy meant to demonstrate Biden’s strength among various party constituencies as he faces...

Back in competition, it’s like Simone Biles never left

Back in competition, it’s like Simone Biles never left HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. — It did not look like Simone Biles had been gone. Her full-twisting double-back dismount from the balance beam, hastily scrapped the last time she was seen in gymnastics competition two years ago, was back. She upgraded a tumbling pass with a casual air.Oh, and yes: She finished the competition with a Yurchenko double pike, a vault not contemplated, much less competed, before Biles introduced it in 2021. She took a step to the side, out of bounds. It hardly mattered: It still received the highest score of the competition.Perhaps it hardly needs saying that she won the competition, the U.S. Classic, which is normally a low-key qualification meet for the national championships but became a spectacle this year because of Biles’ presence. The margin — 5 points over the second-place finisher, Leanne Wong — was normal by Biles’ standards, which are not anybody else’s. That margin between first and second was about the same as the margin between second and 17th.In othe...

Noncitizen voter participation ban in school board elections overturned in SF (BCN) -- The California Court of Appeal upheld a San Francisco voting policy that permits noncitizen parents to participate in city school board elections, announced City Attorney David Chiu on Tuesday. The court determined that the noncitizen voting program in the city is legally sound under the California Constitution and San Francisco's charter city authority. In 2016, city voters approved Proposition N, which has since allowed noncitizen parents and guardians of school children to vote in five local school board elections. Chiu's office said the program was challenged after a February 2022 recall election brough in the "highest participation yet" of noncitizen voters. Fire causes heavy smoke near Port of Oakland A San Francisco Superior Court judge later ruled that the program was unconstitutional. Upon reversing the decision, the appeals court determined that the California Constitution cannot prevent cities from allowing noncitizen residents to vote in elections...
