By Melissa Clark, The New York TimesLate last month in Prospect Park, I ran past a patch of purple crocuses practically glowing in the sun. March temperatures may slouch below freezing and snow may blanket the ground, but nothing can stop the lengthening days from enticing shoots from the soil and people’s moods out of their wintry doldrums. It can snow all it wants, but come the thaw those crocuses will still be fresh and upbeat. It’s at this time of year when I like to embrace lighter, more buoyant broths filled with the season’s most vibrant produce — and little, if any, meat. The key to the deepest, richest flavors in any soup is building complexity at every step. These do just that, as well as using the right techniques to bring out the best of winter’s last crop of vegetables. For example, roasting roots before adding them to a soup pot is a classic way to release their flavor. Colorado’s dry climate is ideal for airborne viruses to survive, according to a new study published in PNAS Nexus by researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder, potentially explaining why people who live in dry climates are more susceptible to such infections. This study, which incorporated a live coronavirus that does not cause COVID-19 rather than bacteria or fungi, showed that airborne viral particles in artificial saliva remain infectious for nearly twice as long in a drier climate than in a humid one.The research was conducted by watching how the virus in artificial saliva reacted to different relative humidity climates. The researchers set the humidity inside a bioaerosol chamber to 60%, 40%, and 25%. At 60% and 40% humidity, the number of virus particles in saliva dropped by half in an hour. At 25%, which is Colorado’s average relative humidity, it took two hours for the number of particles to drop by half.“This study is very relevant to Colorado becau...Oscars roll out the Champagne-colored carpet

When Hollywood's biggest names walk head to the Oscars on Sunday, they'll notice something a little different. The normal red carpet has done a color swap and it's now a Champagne color. On Wednesday, crews rolled out the new color, but it will be still referred to as the red carpet. Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel was on hand to assist with the rollout. He joked that the switch from red to Champagne showed how confident producers are that no blood will be shed this year, following last year's slap involving Will Smith and Chris Rock. This year's ceremony will be the third time Kimmel will have hosted. Days ago he revealed that he is "ready" if another slap were to occur but was choosy as to when he'd intervene. “If somebody comes up on the stage and slaps me? Well, I size them up, and, if I’m bigger than they are, I beat the s— out of them on television. And if it’s the Rock, I run,” he said.KTLA 5's Sam Rubin, Jessica Holmes, Megan Henderson and Doug Kolk will be live on the red carpet s...Latest news
