At just past 8 a.m. on Monday morning, Gregory Nash called out to a group of children walking toward Oakland’s Hoover Elementary School.“Welcome to school guys!” shouted Nash, who works as a family liaison at Hoover. He leaned down to collect a series of tiny, haphazard high-fives. “We’re back!”It was the first day of school at Hoover and all 77 schools at Oakland Unified — one of first of the Bay Area’s large public school districts to start the 2023-2024 academic year. As kids streamed through Hoover’s gates, the courtyard began to fill with excitement. Kids ran to greet their friends while parents checked the class assignments; teachers waved to old students and greeted the new ones.“I feel amazing and nervous,” said 6-year-old Daniel Lands, a newly minted first-grader. “I just graduated from kindergarten, so I hope I make some friends.”Those feelings were echoed by moms, dads, and teachers across the school, especially in light of how last year ended. In May, a strik...DeSantis: ‘Of course’ Donald Trump lost the 2020 election

By Michelle L. Price | Associated PressNEW YORK — Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis said definitively that rival Donald Trump lost the 2020 election, an acknowledgement the Florida governor made after years of equivocating answers.“Of course he lost,” DeSantis said in an interview with NBC News posted Monday. “Joe Biden’s the president.”DeSantis has often sidestepped questions about whether he believes the 2020 election results were legitimate. But in recent days he has started publicly questioning the lies that Trump and his allies have made about the election’s legitimacy.Federal and state election officials and Trump’s own attorney general said there was no credible evidence the election’s outcome was affected by fraud. The former president’s allegations were also roundly rejected by courts at the time, including judges he appointed.Last week, Trump was charged by Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith with...Former Oakland A’s outfielder claimed off waivers by Cleveland

Ramón Laureano, who was designated for assignment by the Oakland A’s over the weekend, has landed in the middle of a division playoff race. The 29-year-old outfielder was claimed off waivers by Cleveland and figures to move right into the middle of the Guardians’ outfield mix.Laureano goes from the team with the worst record in baseball (32-80) to a team battling for the A.L. Central title. Cleveland (54-58) trails Minnesota by just 4.5 games. The Guardians likely will have to win the Central to return to the playoffs for the second year in a row. They entered the day 8.5 games out of the final spot in the AL wild-card race. The A’s placed Laureano, who appeared to be a budding star for the franchise in 2019, to make room for the return of center fielder Esteury Ruiz from the 10-day injured list. But it also could signal that top prospect Lawrence Butler might soon arrive in Oakland.Butler, 23, had a breakout spring training despite never playing a game above Single-...Health officials looking for more Legionnaire's disease cases

(BCN) -- Cooler temperatures are expected to persist in the Bay Area for the next few days accompanied by a slight chance of drizzle later in the week. The high-pressure system that brought hot temperatures to the region over the weekend is being pushed out by a low coming in from the Pacific Northwest, according to the National Weather Service. And while warm summer sunshine will persist through Monday, cooler temperatures are expected to arrive Tuesday and should last through the end of the week. The changing conditions will bring cooler breezes off the ocean, a thicker layer of clouds and the possibility of a little precipitation, said Weather Service meteorologist Sean Miller. Man dies after being rescued from water near Harbor Bay in Alameda "We'll see some patchy fog but we may even see some drizzle here and there, as well, later into the week," Miller said.
