Colton Lochhead | Las Vegas Review-Journal (TNS)LAS VEGAS — Nevada is home to more than 300,000 abandoned mines — mines that can kill you in an almost unimaginable number of ways. But those mines from Nevada’s olden days are attracting a modern-day problem for state and federal officials in charge of taking care of those death traps: vloggers and YouTubers.Interest in abandoned mines has spiked in recent years, according to Sean Derby, chief of Nevada’s abandoned mine lands program with the state Division of Minerals. Part of that has been driven by increased access as off-road vehicles and ATVs have become more popular. But online influencers filming themselves delving into the mines also has played a significant role, Derby said. Most of the mine divers aren’t from Nevada, where the state for decades has gone into schools to educate kids about the dangers that abandoned mines hold, Derby said.“What we’re seeing now though is a new generation coming from all over the place who see mi...Washington State’s feud with ESPN: It’s time for ‘GameDay’ and McAfee to cool things down

ESPN’s ‘College GameDay’ is heading to Dallas this week for the Red River Rivalry. A special guest representing Texas or Oklahoma will undoubtedly make an appearance. So will the Washington State flag, Ol’ Crimson, which flies in the background of the ‘GameDay’ set each week. But will Washington State itself — the school, the team or its representatives — be part of the on-air discussion?Let’s hope not.Because if Kirk Herbstreit, Pat McAfee and the ‘GameDay’ gang are talking about the Cougars, it’s a sign the adults have left the room and the gloves are off the hands.Hopefully, the public spat between the network and the school is over. It started because of a misunderstanding by WSU coach Jake Dickert, escalated on social media when former Cougars QB Ryan Leaf got involved and peaked last weekend when McAfee, on the ‘GameDay’ set, devolved into bully mode and told Washington State to “shut up.&...Union City mobile home park stabbing leaves 1 dead, 2 injured

LOS ANGELES (AP) — UCLA’s defense has made marked improvement in D’Anton Lynn’s first season as coordinator. That unit though will face its biggest litmus test of the season on Saturday when the Bruins host No. 13 Washington State at the Rose Bowl. The unbeaten Cougars (4-0, 1-0 Pac-12) come into the game with the nation’s sixth-ranked offense and have what might be the Pac-12’s most overlooked quarterback in Cameron Ward. While most of the attention has been focused on USC’s Caleb Williams, Washington’s Michael Penix and Colorado’s Shadeur Sanders, Ward is third nationally in passing (347.2 yards per game) and total offense (374.5 ypg).“I think he should be in the conversation with the top quarterbacks in the country,” UCLA coach Chip Kelly said. “He’s athletic, he’s sharp, he throws an extremely accurate ball. I think he’s got great ball location, repetitive accuracy.”Ward and the Cougars have already had two significant victories.
