Fairfax Co. schools still owes thousands of disabled students services from the pandemic Fairfax County Public Schools in Virginia has received an extension to finalize meetings with families of students who may be eligible for extra help in the aftermath of the pandemic.At Thursday’s school board meeting, Superintendent Michelle Reid said the county has already held meetings about eligibility for 30,656 students, or 96.7%, and expects to be finished by next month. The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights extended the deadline for the county to hold all of the meetings to Oct. 15.Of the meetings the school system has already had, it determined that 6,266 students, or 20.4%, were eligible for the extra learning hours. Either the school system can provide the services or families can pursue help through a private vendor and submit it to their school for reimbursement. UK inflation fell unexpectedly in August but the Bank of England is still set to raise rates LONDON (AP) — Inflation across the U.K. fell unexpectedly in August to its lowest level since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine, raising hopes that the Bank of England may pause interest rate hikes after another one on Thursday.The Office for National Statistics said Wednesday that price rises, as measured by the consumer prices index, moderated to 6.7% in the year to August, down from 6.8% in July. The decline took inflation to its lowest level since February 2022, when Russia’s invasion of Ukraine led to soaring energy and food prices.The ONS credited the fall to lower hotel and air fare costs and a moderation in food price rises. These helped offset an increase in energy costs on the back of higher crude oil prices.The decline was unexpected. 4 suspects wanted in deadly carjacking DENVER (KDVR) — Deputies are searching for four suspects, possibly juveniles, who are wanted in a deadly carjacking in Arapahoe County.Around 1 a.m. Wednesday, the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office tweeted about a deadly carjacking in the 7400 block of East Harvard Avenue. Miami Beach PD shut down intersection before MacArthur Causeway following rollover crash The Miami Beach Police Department is investigating a rollover crash at the intersection of Fifth Street and Alton Road, preventing traffic to and from the MacArthur Causeway.
