‘Last day to shop!’: Nordstrom to close all Canadian stores by June 13 Canadians have just a few more days to scoop up any remaining bargains at Nordstrom stores. The high-end U.S.-based retailer says on its website that June 13 will be the “last day to shop!” adding that stores may close sooner based on available inventory. Nordstrom says discounts of between 70 to 80 per cent are available during its final days of liquidation. The Seattle-based retailer announced back on March 2 that it would be shuttering all six Nordstrom and seven Nordstrom Rack stores in Canada. The decision will affect 2,500 jobs across the country. The company’s e-commerce business, nordstrom.ca, has already ceased operations. In announcing the withdrawal from the Canadian market Nordstrom chief executive Erik Nordstrom said they did not see a “realistic path to profitability” for the Canadian operation. Philippines’ Mayon Volcano spews lava down its slopes in gentle eruption putting thousands on alert LEGAZPI, Philippines (AP) — The Philippines’ most active volcano was gently spewing lava down its slopes Monday, alerting tens of thousands of people they may have to quickly flee a violent and life-threatening explosion.More than 12,600 people have left the mostly poor farming communities within a 6-kilometer (3.7-mile) radius of Mayon Volcano’s crater in mandatory evacuations since volcanic activity increased last week. But thousands more remain within the permanent danger zone below Mayon, an area long declared off-limits to people but where generations have lived and farmed because they have nowhere else to go.With the volcano beginning to expel lava Sunday night, the high-risk zone around Mayon may be expanded should the eruption turn violent, said Teresito Bacolcol, director of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. Bacolcol said if that happens, people in any expanded danger zone should be prepared to evacuate to emergency shelters.“What we are seeing now is ...

Mexico’s governing party to decide its presidential nomination by polling MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s governing Morena party decided Sunday that a series of five polls over the summer will decide the party’s nomination for the June 2024 presidential election. All of the four Morena contenders will have to resign their government posts by Friday, including Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum, who is considered the frontrunner. That is meant to prevent primary candidates from using their posts to gain an unfair advantage. Each can campaign throughout the summer. The party is desperate to avoid splits and accusations of manipulated polls that have marked past primary races in Morena. The four contenders joined hands and chanted “Unity! Unity! Unity!” after the announcement. Mexico’s top diplomat, Marcelo Ebrard, has already said he will resign this week. Rounding out the field is Sen. Ricardo Monreal and Interior Secretary Adán López, who is no relation to the president. Two allied parties, the Green and Labor parties, wi...

Traditional 'Maya Union' wedding ceremony held in Long Beach An authentic “Maya Union” wedding ceremony that was open to the public was held Sunday at the Hotel Maya in Long Beach. The service, conducted in the Mayan language, was packed with mysticism steeped in deep, meaningful ancient tradition.  “What we are trying to accomplish with this couple is that they end up bonding for the rest of their lives,” Marco Pacheco, the President and Founder of Casa De La Cultura Maya, told KTLA.  Pacheco noted that in preparation for the Maya Union, everything on the altar was symbolic of the elements fire, earth, water, air and the universe.  “This ancestral music...is Mayan ancestral music. Any time we hear the music, the music brings us to a soothing place right away in ourselves,” he added.  A Mayan elder from the Yucatan Peninsula performed the ceremony, complete with a purification ritual using Copal, a native plant burned by the Mayas as incense.  “Every year, we do things within an overarching campaign to honor all ...

SF Giants: The inside story of Brandon Crawford’s long-awaited debut on the mound

SF Giants: The inside story of Brandon Crawford’s long-awaited debut on the mound SAN FRANCISCO — One of the accolades Brandon Crawford valued most from his 13-year career was the fact that every one of his 1,600 games, all of his 13,178⅔ innings, had come at shortstop while wearing a Giants uniform. In Game No. 1,601, we learned there was something that meant even more to Crawford. After making his long-awaited debut on the mound in the ninth inning of Sunday’s 13-3 win over the Cubs, Crawford is no longer part of the exclusive club of players who spent their entire careers at shortstop, one that only Derek Jeter and Luis Aparacio could claim to with as many games as Crawford.Crawford belongs to a more exclusive club now.“I doubt many guys have played only shortstop for 1,600 games and pitched one game,” Crawford said, smiling. “So I’m on a list there by myself, I think.”That stat, though, is what first ran through Crawford’s head when manager Gabe Kapler approached him with the opportunity in the top of the eighth.Crawford wil...
