SANTA CLARA — Brock Purdy smiled as he strolled the sideline, chatted up happy teammates, and savored the 49ers’ opening scoring drive. It couldn’t have been a starker contrast to the last time he played in a game. You know that game — in Philadelphia, with the NFC Championship on the line, and Purdy helplessly withering in pain because of a torn elbow ligament from the first series of an eventual 31-7 defeat on Jan. 29.This game, it was only a preseason affair, but it reintroduced Purdy to “game speed,” and it offered the 49ers’ home crowd a welcome reminder of his rookie heroics from last season, when he went from “Mr. Irrelevant” to an unbeatable wonder. One series was enough for Purdy’s re-entry.Sam Darnold relieved Purdy after that 10-play opening drive, which ended with a 20-yard field goal from Jake Moody but, more important, saw Purdy escape unscathed after replicating his 2022 play-making ability. In the end, it was T...Mayfield sits while Trask plays in Bucs’ 13-6 preseason win over Jets. EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Baker Mayfield might have won Tampa Bay’s starting quarterback job without even taking a snap in the Buccaneers’ 13-6 preseason victory over the New York Jets on Saturday night.Mayfield was held out and remained on the sideline during Tampa Bay’s second preseason game — a possible sign he has moved ahead of Kyle Trask in the competition to open the season under center. Todd Bowles, who coached the Jets from 2015-18, hadn’t indicated before the game whether either quarterback had an advantage.Trask, listed with Mayfield as the starter on the Buccaneers’ unofficial depth chart, led two scoring drives that gave Tampa Bay (1-1) a 10-6 halftime lead. The third-year quarterback went 16 of 23 for 122 yards, including a 33-yard TD toss to rookie Trey Palmer, in the first half. But he had to re-enter the game with 1:03 left in the third quarter when third-stringer John Wolford was carted off the field and taken to the hospital with a neck ...Rosario has 4 hits, including go-ahead 2-run homer, as Braves beat Giants 6-5

ATLANTA (AP) — Eddie Rosario normally expects to need more than one pitch to pick up San Francisco right-hander Tyler Rogers’ submarine delivery. On this night, however, Rosario wasn’t waiting.Rosario had four hits, including a go-ahead, two-run homer in the eighth inning, and the Atlanta Braves beat the San Francisco Giants 6-5 on Saturday night for their fifth straight win.Marcell Ozuna hit a two-out single off Rogers (4-5) in the eighth. Rosario followed with his 19th homer, a first-pitch blast that carried 441 feet to center field.“The pitches are definitely hard to see and hard to pick up,” Rosario said through a translator when asked about Rogers’ unique delivery. “Sometimes I feel I need to take a pitch just to see where it’s coming from. Tonight it was just my night. I feel they could have thrown one underground and I would have still been able to hit it.” Fans chanted “Eddie! Eddie!” before Rosario hopped out of the dugout to take his bow. Ronald Acuñ...Davis Schneider hit tiebreaking solo homer as Toronto Blue Jays edge Cincinnati Reds 4-3

(CNN) — An Idaho judge on Friday gave Bryan Kohberger’s attorneys three weeks to submit evidence for the accused killer’s alibi if he plans on using that as a defense. The state has argued Kohberger must provide his exact whereabouts the night of last year’s killings of four University of Idaho students and any witnesses who can support the defendant’s claim that he was out for a drive alone that night. His defense team submitted that “Mr. Kohberger has a long habit of going for drives alone. Often he would go for drives at night. He did so late on November 12 and into November 13, 2022. President Joe Biden has professed sympathy for American consumers pinched by inflation. But his actions speak louder than his hollow lip service.Inflation has stabilized over the past 12 months after skyrocketing to more than 9% — a number not seen in four decades. But the White House seems intent on exacerbating the problem.Recently, Vice President Kamala Harris was in Philadelphia to announce that the Labor Department had revamped a rule governing worker pay on federal construction projects. The reform will relax the standard by which so-called “prevailing wages” are set under the Davis-Bacon Act, which dates to the Great Depression. The new regulation will raise wages for workers on federal projects and, Harris said, “That’s thousands of dollars more every year, to help put a down payment on a home, for example, or to save for retirement, or to simply take their family on vacation once a year.”Not surprisingly, the vice president omitted the fact that this will also drive up the c...Latest news
