ATLANTA (AP) — Police say they have apprehended a man who allegedly opened fire inside the waiting room of an Atlanta medical facility, killing one woman and injuring four others Wednesday.Authorities had swarmed the city’s bustling midtown neighborhood earlier in the day in search of the suspect, who fled after the shooting. Police said in a statement that the gunman, who they identified as 24-year-old Deion Patterson, was captured Wednesday evening. Authorities did not immediately release additional information about where Patterson was found.Authorities said Patterson stole a vehicle and drove away after shooting five women on the 11th floor of a Northside medical building shortly after noon. The facility is in a commercial area filled with office towers and high-rise apartments and news of the shooting prompted workers and lunchgoers to shelter in place for hours.Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said a 39-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting. He announced on April 20 that he was cancer–free. And now he’s remarkably one step closer to joining the Sox, beginning a minor-league rehab assignment Friday with Triple-A Charlotte at Gwinnett.“As soon as I found out the regular treatment timelines, I was like, ‘OK, how can I beat it,’” said Hendriks, who met with reporters wearing a T-shirt with the words “struckout cancer” Wednesday at Guaranteed Rate Field.Hendriks said lumps in his neck discovered in June were triggers. Since he first heard the diagnosis, Hendriks never took the view of “Why me?”“I looked at it as a ‘Why not me?’ ” he said. “I tend to have a little rosier perspective on life. By JUAN A. LOZANO and NOMAAN MERCHANT (Associated Press)CLEVELAND, Texas (AP) — A man suspected of killing five of his neighbors in Texas after they asked him to stop shooting his gun near their house hid out just miles away from the slayings while he and his domestic partner plotted his escape to Mexico, authorities said Wednesday. Francisco Oropeza showered and slept at the house outside the city of Conroe while Divimara Lamar Nava got him donuts from a nearby store, a prosecutor said. Lamar Nava also acknowledged delivering a message from Oropeza to his cousins in the area asking for their help getting him out of the country, the prosecutor said at Lamar Nava’s probable cause hearing. The cousins refused to help.Authorities believe Lamar Nava was talking to investigators at the same time she was trying to help Oropeza, San Jacinto County District Attorney Todd Dillon said at a news conference. Oropeza, 38, was arrested late Tuesday at the house, just 20 miles (32 kilo...Yankees Notebook: Brian Cashman speaks with his team in last place

He also had a message for fans with the Yankees amid a rough stretch that has seen them struggle to score runs and win games.“We have time to make up ground,” the general manager said, adding that he still thinks the Yankees can contend for a championship. “Don’t count us out. Don’t give up on us.”Below are the biggest takeaways from Cashman’s first media session of the season.INJURIES, INJURIES, INJURIESEven though the Yankees entered spring training with a handful of question marks, Cashman pushed the idea that his team’s woes are mainly the result of injuries. The Yankees...Fresh off winning MVP, 76ers star Joel Embiid surprisingly returns for Game 2 vs.. Celtics

There was a notion that because the 76ers stole Monday’s Game 1 without him, that they would give Joel Embiid some extra rest to recover from his injury and not rush him back for Game 2, knowing they had some margin for error after already taking home-court advantage from the Celtics. That idea ultimately didn’t hold water. Embiid – who was named the NBA MVP on Tuesday night – returned for Wednesday night’s Game 2. It came as somewhat of a surprise. Embiid, who suffered a sprained LCL in his right knee during Game 3 of the Sixers’ first-round sweep of the Nets, had not even resumed running as of Monday, according to coach Doc Rivers. The center was listed as doubtful on Tuesday. But even with a 1-0 series lead in hand, Embiid was back.“It’s logical thinking,” Rivers said of the idea of giving him some extra rest. “But players, when they’re healthy, they should play. And when they’re not, they shouldn’t play. That would be my answer. So I can guarantee you if Joel’s p...Police capture suspect in deadly shooting at Atlanta medical facility

LOS ANGELES (AP) — For the first time, researchers have captured and radio-collared a bear in the Santa Monica Mountains near Los Angeles where mountain lions have been studied for two decades, the National Park Service said Wednesday. The 210-pound (95-kilogram) black bear dubbed BB-12 was caught April 23 in a natural area south of U.S. Route 101 on the western end of the range, the park service said in a statement. It’s the first time in 20 years that scientists have encountered a bear that has taken up residence in the mountains northwest of downtown LA, according to Jeff Sikich, a park service biologist who studies cougars. “He appears to be the only bear here in the Santa Monica Mountains, and he’s likely been here for almost two years based on our remote camera data,” Sikich said. “It will be interesting to see how he shares the landscape with our other resident large carnivores.”BB-12, a male estimated to be about 3 or 4 years old, was measured, given a physical e...Latest news
