GRAND PORTAGE, Minn. — A lack of snow may delay next month’s annual John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon.Mike Keyport, president of the Beargrease board of directors, said a decision will be made in the first week of January on whether to postpone the race’s Jan. 28 start date to March 3.With the 300-mile route from Duluth to Grand Portage nearly snowless, Keyport is hoping this winter’s warm weather will cool and enough snow will fall to reach the preferred 18-inch base of snow on the trails. But the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center’s 8-14 day outlook and January through March outlook both predict above-normal temperatures and below-normal precipitation for the region.“I would say I’m not in panic mode, but very concerned,” said Keyport, the great-grandson of John Beargrease, an Anishinaabe man who delivered mail along the North Shore via dog sled.If there ends up being more snow farther north, organizers are also considering moving the start line from Billy’s...'Aquaman' sequel drifts to first on subdued Christmas weekend

“ Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom ” led a crowd of new releases at the box office on the weekend before Christmas Monday. The DC and Warner Bros. superhero sequel starring Jason Momoa earned an estimated $28.1 million in its first three days of release in 3,706 locations in North America, according to studio estimates Sunday. By Monday it is projected to have around $40 million in domestic ticket sales.Despite many new offerings — including the family friendly animated film “ Migration,” the R-rated romantic comedy “Anyone But You,” the wrestling tragedy “ The Iron Claw ” and a ghostly tearjerker in “ All of Us Strangers ” — this will go down as a quieter pre-holiday frame at the box office. Moviegoing audiences perhaps just had other priorities than going to the cinema. It is never great for Hollywood or theaters when Christmas Eve falls on a prime weekend day, but the last time Christmas was on a Monday, in 2017, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” dominated the four-day charts with $71.5 mil...Bay Area: Coast flooding, hazardous beach conditions expected on Christmas Day

Al r...Broncos decline to activate Kareem Jackson after his latest suspension, meaning he could be cut

DENVER (AP) — There’s a good possibility 14th-year safety Kareem Jackson will get cut on Christmas Day after the Denver Broncos chose not to activate him for their game against New England on Sunday night following his return from his second suspension. The Broncos’ roster exemption on Jackson expires Monday, so they’ll either have to make room for him by bidding farewell to another player or release the 14-year veteran. If that happens, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the end of the road for Jackson in Denver. The Broncos could try to re-sign him to their practice squad and then elevate him for their final two games and any playoff games if they qualify. But a release would certainly open the possibility Denver’s defensive tone-setter has played his last game in navy and orange, if not in the NFL altogether.PJ Locke has played exceptionally well in Jackson’s absence and he became the first safety in franchise history to sack the quarterback in t...City of Frederick to ban businesses from giving out plastic bags

The city of Frederick, Maryland, is banning businesses from giving out plastic bags starting in the new year.Customers will have to bring their own bags to stores to shop for items like food, clothes and hardware starting Jan. 1, 2024. Businesses can offer paper bags as an alternative. The city said that the goal of the plastic bag ban is to improve the environment of Frederick and safeguard the health of residents “by reducing the number of single use plastic bags in the stream of commerce, litter, pollution, waste and to encourage the use of reusable bags.”Frederick’s decision is in alignment with a statewide effort to ban plastic bags.In June, lawmakers in Anne Arundel County ordered a similar ban on plastic bags at grocery stores. That law will go into effect in January as well.Prince George’s County Council also passed a bill in May that would ban plastic bags and add a 10-cent fee for each paper bag used at retail stores across the county.SourceLatest news
