Heat-related illness, deaths loom as temps spike, sending up nearly 500 Colorado residents a year to emergency rooms As hot weather baked Colorado this week and forecasters anticipated hotter days to come, state health authorities warned of heat-related illnesses that increasingly send residents to hospitals.“Heat waves are becoming more common,” Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment officials warn in their latest public guidance on risks of heat exhaustion and stroke. “Heat-related illnesses can damage the brain and other vital organs.”State health authorities recommend that, when temperatures exceed 90 degrees for several days, residents “stay in an air-conditioned area” — difficult for workers whose jobs require outdoor activity and thousands of people living on the streets. State auditor’s office blasts Cal State for mishandling sexual misconduct cases One day after California State University released a damning report about its mishandlings of sexual misconduct cases, the state auditor’s office has released an investigation of its own — one that calls for urgent, “systemwide changes” across the 23-campus network. The state auditor’s office reviewed 40 cases of alleged sexual harassment by employees of California State. In the process, it found the nation’s largest public university system repeatedly failed to address allegations of sexual harassment, revealing a lack of accountability at the highest level. The report noted that “campuses did not consistently count the number of reports of sexual harassment that they received.” But from what they did find, from 2018 to 2022, at least 1,251 employees at California State had been accused of sexual harassment allegations. Pac-12 media rights negotiations: No deal expected this week as football takes center stage in Las Vegas The Pac-12 won’t announce a long-awaited media rights deal before or during its preseason football media showcase Friday in Las Vegas, according to conference sources. Instead, the event will focus on the teams, players and coaches underpinning the conference’s most anticipated football season in years.Of course, the best-laid plans can be laid to waste by the forces of realignment. Commissioner George Kliavkoff is sure to face questions about an existential crisis that began 55 weeks ago, when USC and UCLA announced they would join the Big Ten in 2024, and remains unresolved.Exactly what Kliavkoff will say about the saga during his remarks at Resorts World Las Vegas, and during the subsequent question-and-answer session with reporters, is not clear at this point. However, the timing of the Big Ten’s media agreement last summer has always seemed instructive: The conference unveiled its groundbreaking deal with Fox, NBC and CBS on Aug. 18 — two weeks before the start of the 2022...

And what kind of haul should teams like the Giants give up to get him?Major League Baseball’s trade deadline is coming up on Aug. 1, giving the Angels two weeks to make a decision with their free-agent-to-be superstar. It’s easy to see why everyone wants Ohtani. He’s fourth in all of baseball in strikeouts as a pitcher (139) while going 7-5 with a 3.50 ERA in 18 starts, and he’s the major league leader in home runs (35).Even with that MVP-level performance, the Angels enter Tuesday with a 47-48 record, 5.5 games out of the final American League wild card spot with four teams ahead of them.MLB Network insider Jon Heyman spoke to Bleacher Report Monday and handicapped the chances of Ohtani getting traded before the deadline at percent 25%. But if Ohtani is traded, Heyman said that Angels owner...
