Past firings carry lessons for Fox after Carlson By David Bauder | Associated PressNEW YORK — Before ousting Tucker Carlson, Fox News had twice fired wildly popular hosts – and both times the network recovered better than the stars it cut loose.Fox’s dismissals of Glenn Beck in 2011 and Bill O’Reilly in 2017 offer lessons in what the post-Carlson fallout might be. Carlson was let go on Monday, less than a week after Fox agreed to pay Dominion Voting Systems $787 million for airing bogus claims of voter fraud following the 2020 election.Fox’s two most popular programs last year — Carlson’s being one of them — were the replacements for Beck and O’Reilly.“It seems like the parts are interchangeable,” said SiriusXM and CNN personality Michael Smerconish. “They’ve built a machine over there that seems to function even when the pistons are replaced.”Still, Carlson’s ability to connect with supporters of former President Donald Trump could benefit him wherever he lands.Bec...

Teen who inspired JW House would appreciate families’ connection The guests at Wednesday’s Celebration of Hope breakfast in Campbell — a fundraiser for JW House – are about to be treated to an amazing story about the surprising connection between two families. It’s a tale that would have been appreciated by the teenager who dreamed of creating JW House as a home away from home for families whose kids were undergoing medical treatment. For Racy Ming Copley, the story started last year when her 12-year-old daughter, Sophia Copley, discovered a lump on her side that was diagnosed in December as Ewing sarcoma — a cancerous tumor that grows on the soft tissue around bones. In Sophia’s case, the tumor was on one of her ribs, and doctors wanted her to begin chemotherapy right away, scuttling plans for an end-of-year family vacation to celebrate the 50th birthday of her dad, Myles Copley. “Instead of going to Hawaii, we went to chemo,” Racy Copley said.Sophia is on a compressed chemotherapy schedule, meaning...

Tucker Carlson’s misogyny and use of vulgar word were a ‘key factor’ in his firing, reports say It may not have been Tucker Carlson’s racist statements or his dissemination of election denialism that sealed his fate and led to his surprise firing from Fox News Monday. The “leading theory” for why Rupert Murdoch and other Fox executives finally decided it was time to part ways with the provocative face of their network was his misogynistic behavior, according to reports from New York magazine and the Daily Beast. While Fox News settled the defamation lawsuit brought by Dominion Voting Systems for a record $787.5 million last week, the network is still mired in a suit brought by former producer Abby Grossberg, who alleges Carlson encouraged a toxic, sexist work environment. Both the Dominion lawsuit and Grossberg’s allegations “showcased Carlson and his staff’s penchant for misogyny — a tendency that reportedly didn’t go over well with top executives,” New York Magazine said.Fox News has offered no explanation for why it fired its top-rate...
